After the girls had a chance to go on every ride twice and stuff their faces full of junk food, we were nearing the end of our unexpected family outing.

“Hey! Why don’t we do a couple of games before heading out?” Nate suggested.

The girls’ eyes lit up with excitement, but turned to me for permission. “Can we, please?”

“Don’t you think it’s a little late, Sade?” Alex leaned in, hoping they wouldn’t be able to overhear he was planning to end their night short. “It’s past their bedtime.”

“A few games won’t hurt. Besides, look how much fun they’re having.” I batted my eyelashes at him and knew he would cave instantly. His lip curled into a grin and I clapped along with them. “Alright, but only a few, and then it’s time to go. I just have to go to the kiosk and take some cash out.”

“No need.” Nate whipped out his wallet before either of us could. “My treat. Alex was kind enough to pay for the rides. I’d be more than happy to escort these wonderful girls around the game tent.”

Nora shrieked, grabbing Nate’s hand and guiding him to the entrance of the tent. Sarah also joined in and skipped along the other side of him just so he could keep up. My heart swelled at the side of the twins bonding with Nate. It was something I never expected to happen.

“You two are becoming quite cozy,” Alex murmured, bumping shoulders with me. I looked sideways at him, and it was evident he was clenching his jaw to refrain from saying anything more.

“He’s easy to get along with,” I replied.

“I guess it helps that you two used to date.” He said it so casually that, for a second, I wondered if I had imagined it. I stopped, and he did too, a look of disappointment washing over his face.

“He told you?”

“A while ago,” Alex confirmed. “The question is, why didn’t you tell me?”

I felt myself deflate under his heavy gaze. “I was embarrassed. How would you feel admitting that you’re working for your ex-boyfriend? One who left overnight and broke your heart?”

My chin trembled and it took all my strength to keep myself together, if not for me, for the kids.

“He doesn’t deserve you, Sade.” Alex’s hand slipped in mine, and for the first time, it felt like it might be something more than just a friendly gesture. It felt like I had stepped in concrete, unable to move—or escape. “He’s a wanderer. He’ll never settle down and be the man you want or need. Once this competition is all over with Jack and he’s left with nothing, he’ll leave. Surely you know that.”

I did not, but it was what I was most afraid of; the thought that kept me up at night.

“He’s different now,” I said, swallowing the lump in my throat. “Besides, it doesn’t matter. We’re just—”

“Friends?” Alex raised an eyebrow and shook his head. “You can fool everyone else, but not me. Just promise you’ll be careful.
